Amped up on the excitement of creating this website, I ran a workshop today on making a research website using WordPress.com. About a dozen grad students from BESS or Soil and Crop Science came, and we ran through the very basics of making a site, creating pages, running a page for blog posts, some site logistics/security, and themes. It was hopefully enough to get people started. One thing I would have liked to have gotten into more is a discussion of what should go into a research website, what sort of web presence researchers should try to develop, and how that might change throughout their careers, and the importance of (online) social networking in academia. Maybe that could be material for a future workshop!
